Inmates can buy things in the commissary. It can also be used to buy paper, stamps, and envelopes for writing letters.

Try not to worry. For one thing, you don't know when their next paycheck is coming. $600 isn't a lot to keep in savings, but if their paychecks are enough to cover all the bills and daily needs, then they are living within their means. For another, their level of debt is more important than the cash they keep on hand. If they don't carry over credit card debt, and if their mortgage and car payment can be covered as part of the"bills" I mentioned in the last sentence, then they aren't in danger of losing your house or going bankrupt. They may also have assets you don't know about, such as investments or bonds or certificates of deposit. Although now wouldn't be the best time to cash in on those things, they are still an option in an emergency. Do they have secure jobs? If their income is reasonably guaranteed for the next 6-12 months, they can take steps to save a little more of it. As for the swimming pool, it can be emptied if need be, and other non-necessities can be lived without for a while. You are a great daughter to be concerned. Maybe you can help by conserving water, gas, and electricity and not asking your parents to give you money for things you don't really need. If you're old enough to get a part time job and can fit one into your life, consider doing that to pay for some of your own clothing and personal items. I think your parents should talk to you, just to ease your mind. Tell them you're worried and ask how you can help.

Both of my parent's were in prison for a long time. My grandparents would send them money to spend at the canteen or commissary where they could buy cigarettes, playing cards, envelopes, small radios, stamps and other items. Also around Christmas time a lot of jails offer programs where you can pick out an item to be sent to your child/children if you don't choose to participate in a free program like Angel Tree.

Jail is not free. That's why. You have to pay the state top dollar to be incarcerated. You have to pay for soap, Deodorant, Snacks to get you through the week, Cigarettes,You have to pay for everything. Even being their. I think it is like 1 to 2 dollars a day in north Carolina. Think about it. They are providing you with food, shelter, and electricity, and water. You have to pay. But if you want to survive their you need money. You cant walk around stinking because you will catch a lock in the sock. And if you owe someone some money for something and you have to give them your tray then your gonna starve so it's best to have money on your books so that you can eat for that week.

It's for canteen. Once a week prisoners can order magazines, certain brand shampoo and soap assorted approved treats they look forward to. That's the official side of things it is not uncommon to have somebody visit a person then afterwards deposit money into a complete strangers canteen at their imprisoned Friends request. Perhaps money lost playing, perhaps something else.

"queen bee" should be listened to on this question because as a lying stealing scumsucking liberal, she is very familair with prisons.
he could use the money to trade for things such as being left alone and not having to give any blow jobs that day.
also, he could ask the guard to pick up a Wall Street Journal for him on the way to work and pay him when he comes in.
or perhaps bird seed. many prisoners sentenced for a long time become "birdmen", as they are mostly mental after a while.
