This goes back to an old TV show that was called;"Happy Days."
Towards the end of the shows life there was an episode were Fonz was water skiing and then on a bet jump an area with sharks. The show was terrible. Fonz was on the water w/a leather jacket, the plot was all washed up. That is were the phrase Jumping the shark came from. You probably heard the new phrase," Jumping the Couch." That means you are acting crazy. This is when Tom Cruz was on Oprah talking about Katie Holmes and he really jumped the couch on the show.

going too far with a good TV show and, in turn, ruining the show.

It's derived from a TV show called Happy Days. Henry Winkler played "The Fonz", a biker that hung out with high school kids. The show peaked in an episode where The Fonz jumped over sharks on water skis

The guy below me is totally wrong. He probably thinks Howard Stern invented all the phrases and skits that he's been ripping off for decades.

It's when a show is pretty much over, though it may still be on the air. It's the point when a show loses its initial appeal and tries to remedy that. For example, there may be a ridiculous plot line, change of an actor who plays a certain character or addition of a cute little kid

Well, judging from the other answers, I guess it came out of "Happy Days". I remember the show. It was a really funny and dumb tv show. Just the thing to watch to take your mind off of your problems.

It's when something is on it's way to being old/canceled. I've most frequently heard it in terms of describing tv shows.
