Trying to buy a new, very cheap ($300 range) Dell computer for my dad, but I want to get him a nice fast system that will last and work well (e.g. at least 512MB of RAM). He mostly just visits many websites, images, news articles, sometimes a few videos, email, etc. Will there be a real significant difference between, say, an AMD Sempron or Athlon, or an Intel Celeron or Pentium 4?

I would suggest buying the cheapest computer you can find. There are a lot of good deals out there right now because of the holiday season. It doesnt sound like your Dad is a power user and the cheapest desktop you can find will work.

it dont really matter which type if its only to rome around the net or to look at images and videos. With these cheap new Dell they have out there in the stores now, they have a ok processor. Because to tell you, the computers now a day are just mostly to go online and do little things as looking at pictures and videos, you can say a computer media. But if you're gonna be doing things like 3D modeling and crazy computer use than maybe you'll need to carefully choose a processor. But other than that, you'll be fine with that $300 range computer.

Of the things you listed, the most impact would be to the video. Internet browsing, email, etc doesn't take much resources at all.

Depending on what else you have running at the time, if you have a slower processor the video may be of lower quality or choppy.

You mostly notice the processor difference when running a lot of programs at the same time or very processor-intensive programs like games, digital imaging apps, etc.

nope. only difference is power consumption. event the cheap computers have a sufficient amount of ram and video graphics for the everyday computer user. but even then, they are more often then not upgradeable. Just be sure that when you buy it, its windows vista compatible. even your dad will love how much easier the User Interface is. Windows vista is the new operating system that will be released early next year. and it is a free upgrade ~
