Plate tectonics. The San Andreas fault is the position 2 plates of the Earth's lithosphere meet. The transferring/transferring of both plates alongside one yet another leads to an Earthquake. yet another get at the same time is the ring of hearth.

There are several categories of faults. The fault in California is a type of fault that grinds veritically in opposite directions. I tihnk it's called a strike-slip fault. There is also more tectonic movement there.

basically, the tectonic plates of the Americas are moving west, crunching into the Pacific plate, making the entire west coast, from Alaska to Chile, comparatively volatile.

Florida is not located where plates are crunching; it is fairly safely situated on the North American plate (which extends out into the mid-Atlantic).
