"How did foreign and domestic issues give to rise to the first parties in the United States"

The Federalist Party supported pro-British trade and advocated more flexibility on a Constitutional issue (loose constructionist).

The Republican (or Democratic-Republican) Party supported pro-Fench trade and held to a closer reading of the constitution (strict constructionist).

Serena, give thought to the time frame when Ben Franklin was living in Paris representing the United States. Initially, there was no Constitution. Instead, there were the Articles of Confederation. The fear was that Federal government would overtake State's Rights. Not everyone was in agreement with the way things should be run. Can you begin to see how this would develope foreign polies as well as political parties here in the States? Think about it a bit and then explore your thoughts.
