Dark matter is an invisible kind of matter (that is, it doesn't radiate or reflect light of any kind) that helps hold galaxies together. It was originally discovered when people found that there wasn't enough normal matter in galaxies to keep them from flying apart at the rate they were spinning. Recently scientists have found some distant galaxies that are composed almost entirely of dark matter and have very little normal matter.

Dark energy is an invisible energy that pervades the entire Universe, probably equally in all places. Unlike dark matter and everything else we know of which have positive gravity, dark energy has negative gravity, pushing everything else farther apart. It was discovered when scientists found distant supernovas that proved the Universe was expanding faster than it should, and therefore accelerating in its expansion.

It is unlikely that dark matter and dark energy are related any more closely than anything else. In fact, dark energy is so strange that it is probably much less like dark matter than normal matter and energy are.
