Records are the only way. If you are using cd's, you are just some dude who knows how to work a radio. It takes more than just hitting the play button to be a good DJ.

It really depends on what kind of dj you are. Are you just playing for weddings, dances, etc.? Or are you trying to become a mix-master? If it's the first scenario, then definitely go with cd's. You can get more usage out of them, they're more compact, and they don't require a lot of quiet time in order to go to the next song. If you are trying to be a mix-master, then roll out the records. They are truly authentic sounding and they get the job done.

If you're a DJ you should probably use records because it's easier to go from one song into another. I recently went to a party that had a laptop play music and let me say it sucked! Everytime the song ended there was that silence that slows the party down. Go for the records!!!

Purists prefer records. For someone just starting out you might find CDs and a computer with a good audio editor programme easier.
