Your pig needs an unlimited amount of grass hay. This can be timothy, bluegrass, orchardgrass, just about any type of grass hay except alfalfa (unless your pig is a baby).

For food, your pig needs between 1/8 and 1/4 of a cup of a good quality pellet per day. It should be a plain pellet, with no seeds, and no colored bits. Oxbow makes the best quality pellet available. Try to stay away from poor quality pellets like Kaytee and Nutriphase.

Bedding should be aspen shavings, carefresh, critter comfort, or Yesterday's News. Corn cob should not be used because of danger of ingestion and the fact that it tends to mold quickly, and pine and cedar shavings both pose respiratory dangers.

hay is not bedding. Hay is food, but with little important nutrition. Bedding can be anything that you can keep clean... cotton and wool beds are fine, but hard to keep clean. Just make sure they have a place to lay flat (no metal cage bottoms). The most simple thing is an old hot-mit/pad (for taking things out of the oven).

The best food is fresh: untreated grass, dandelions, lettuce, sweet peppers, etc. ... even a little fruit as a treat (but watch quantity as it can lead to soft stool.)

The next best thing is guinea pig food from the store. But, most pigs leave much of this behind as they don't like it.

The SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING is to make sure they get enough vitamin C. You can even give them chewable vitamin C from the store. Guinea pigs will die without vitamin C in short order. They cannot really OD on vitamin C from natural sources.

Good luck.

OK first off if you going to use wood shavings aspen is the best the others have irritating oils to there skin, more expensive but the best is Carefresh. My pigs ate Katee Forti diet it doesn't have dried fruit or nuts which are one a choking hazard and second not healthy for them and it has all the vitamin c in the pellets, never put any supplements in there water!. For hay i used Katee Timothy and sometimes alfa.Hope this helps!

A basic diet of quality hay, pellets and vegs will keep your cavy healthy.
As for bedding, AVOID cedar, corncob bedding, straw, & newspaper.

And as the idea of hay as the bedding:
While hay is not a good bedding material when used alone, it works well when combined with other absorbent bedding materials, especially if you wish to set up a litter box. The hay itself is not absorbent and should be removed and replaced daily.

They love Timothy Hay, and normally one uses cedar chips for the bedding, it keeps the mites out.

I used something called "Corn Cob" for my Guinea Pigs, they loved it! You can feed "Alfalfa" for them to nibble on.
