You need the sun, because the calcium, and uv rays are what effect your skin pigment, therefore there is no substitute for the sun. The heat doesn't have much of an effect, for example, when you go skiining you still get a tan on the slopes, even if your cold. But also keep in mind too much UV exposure can be harmful and dry out your skin, so moistuise or use like an spf 5 lotion.

I am hispanic so i already have dark skin. but my friend that is white, she said that you just walk on hot days with shorts and a tan top ( if you live near the ocean). just lay down in the sun. Or, go to a outside pool and put on tan lotion and wait 7 min, you can go swim. and then you might get a tan. It also depends on how white you are, cause my friend is not white, but she is light skinned. She is darker now, but now its winter, she is becoming white again. so, you have to always be in the sun. Because your nature skin will become normal when there is no heat from the sun. Good luck!!

I believe it is the uv rays, since when you put on sun block, you are not cooling down, you are just blocking the uv rays from hitting your skin.
ps- you are very pretty.

yes its the ultra violet radiation that turns the melanin in ur skin brown... luckily the ozone layer absorbs most of the rays... and remember... u cant tan through glass cos glass absorbs the raidiation

the suns rays is what gives your skin its brown color, and if you sit in heat for along time you'll either cook urself or else become very pink, not tan. also tanning is very bad for u, causes skin cancer.
