Just wondering if this is a common problem and what it may be. We are taking it in tomorrow to get looked at and I want to brace myself. Hopefully it is a cheap fix. It just stopped working one day.

The brake lights were out and the cruise control wouldn't work without them. Very cheap fix!

There are three things that I would check;
1) Stop lamp switch adjustment.
2) All stop lamp bulbs including CHMSL (center high mount stop lamp) or third brake light. Also check the connection to the stop,turn and tail lamps circuit boards.
3) Check for failure codes, PCM and BCM.

There are a variety of aparent problems with the electronics
in the whole history of cruise control. One or two common
ones that could be prevented. Warm the auto up sufficiently
say for 4 minutes, get all the oils moving. Another is to check
the oils more often, some people have a better response from
being quite cautious and aware of fluid levels being updated.
The area that this helps is satellite status, getting a better turn
in the electronic safe by being cautious.
