This is due to the variance in the location of the jet stream and the fact that strong cold fronts bringing air from the Arctic have yet to descend across the US. Highs are in the 50s in Chicago, which is virtually record-breaking heat for mid-December. The unseasonable heat is not endemic to South Florida.

So why is the cold air staying up in Canada? El Nino is making its presence felt. Most of us can look forward to a warmer than normal winter, and South Florida can look forward to rain reminiscent of the winter of 1997.

On the bright side, you'll have great beach weather all winter! The water should remain warm and the surf will be up. Enjoy!

It's where both oceans meet and the water is warmer which is causing the change.

Its not the heat, its the humidity. In AZ and Death Valley, its the heat.
