like di mono ate etc? like carbon DIoxide would the DI state that there are two atoms of oxygen?

There is nothing that states how many there can be. ate means it contains oxygen. ite means it contains less oxygen

in the benzene rings, verbal formula is

ethane, methane, propane,butane,pentane,hexane,heptane,octane,nonane,decane

in other structures use either a number as in CO2 or when naming a structure use the Latin equivalent

such as bi-phenol, tri-chlorine etc., etc.,

there is no SIMPLE rule.. various structures call for various referral points, depending on the chemical bond
