I liked both of these movies.

"Payback" is a lot better. Mel Gibson stars a brutal revenge plot against the drug supplier who enabled Gibson's wife to die of an overdose. This movie has a much more compelling story than "Face Off".
Even if you buy the concept of switching faces in "Face Off", the movie had plot hole big enough to drive a truck through. I will say for all out action, "Face Off" does rate higher than "Payback."

I would go for Payback.... for a few reasons. One, how often do you see Mel Gibson playing a bad guy role? (at least in the movies, though). Two, as to the probability of happening, the story of Payback can at least happen in real life. Three, Payback did good even without the usual car chase scene action movies are so full of that eats away the movie's running time.

I prefer Face Off to Payback for the simple reason that John Woo, the directory of Face Off, is a master at imparting a sense of artistry and beauty to even the most violent scenes. Fight sequences and gun battles in a story directed by someone else would probably look quite ordinary, the way it did in Payback. Yet John Woo directs pictures, like Face Off, in such a way that an ordinary fight scene becomes a dance with complex choreography seemingly oozing from every frame of the picture. It truly is a thing of beauty. That church gun battle at the end between Travolta’s character and Nicolas Cage’s character was a classic.

"Face Off" because John Woo did such a good job with the fighting scenes. I also love the human part where John T. as Nic Cage had a chance to take care of his enemy's son to show him a good life. My favorite scene was the church shoot out!

mel gibson s more badass!so i choose payback cause face off s an ordinary action b-movie with strong story line..but there r many better action films out there..payback s action,comedy,drama etc...

Face Off, most def! I loved cages character before the switch, Travolta was good as well. Good action...cinematography
