Most troubled teens have so many other issues going on, including developmental delays, that make them the type that doesn't like to do any reading. The only way you can get through to these kids is by hugs, love, and attention. If by some chance they can read, then I recommend The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, by Stephen Covey. He has a good insight into how teens think, and his writing style is easy for them to understand and relate to.

A book which comes to mind John Marsden's 'Dear Miffy', about a rather messed up teenage boy writing letters to a girl. He's another very good Young Adult writer, actually. 'Checkers' is another good one, about a girl in a mental hospital. His 'Tomorrow' series is extremely popular and brilliant, though I'm not sure if that's exactly that you're looking for, as it's about teenagers dealing with fighting a guerilla war. Though it's about 50% angst, 30% romance, and 20% fighting. Since that's a lot of books right there, I think I'll stop ;) Hope this helped a bit!

try authors Melody Carlson,Lurlene McDaniel, and the chicken soup for the soul series.Because of Wynn Dixie she might enjoy-although it's more geared to the 11-13 yr. old crowd.
Most importantly give her a copy of the Bible, preferably the new living translation or even one of the teen study type of bibles. Just not the king james version!

sorry to say that if you were to hand me a self-help book (or a bible) the chance that i would throw it right back at you would be pretty large. i'd say give the girl books like joyce and sallinger or i have friends who really liked 'the perks of being a wallflower'. she'll be able to feel like her emotions are expressed there, and it will be comforting to her.

John Marsden is an Australian teen author that writes absolutely fantastic books. I'd recommend anything by him. I still read his books and I'm in my mid-20's now.

The Bible
Gosh, I really don't mean for that to be sarcastic as it sounds.
In reality, the stories in the bible are as bad as any soap opera.
Sex, lies, deceit, murder, destruction, drunkeness, evil.
Everything a troubled kid can relate too it in there.
