My in laws are a little old school and I'm pretty sure they are a little peeved about not getting the big Traditional bash where you have a Turkey and a ham and the Christmas pudding etc. My family are more than happy to have the BBQ. We have had our years of the Traditional Feast and over the last few years we've gone for the BBQ which is more relaxed and I think a little more social and to be honest, a little more AUSSIE. Maybe it's just me, I'm not a big fan on doing something just cos it's the tradition. What do you ppl think?

If you live in a warm-weather climate, or in the Southern Hemisphere like you do, it makes a lot more sense to have a gourmet barbecue on Christmas Day rather than a sit-down indoor turkey feast. Consider how they celebrate Christmas in places like Mexico.

As a bow to your in-laws, you might consider barbecuing some turkey legs or slices of ham.

I'd hate to see someone try to have a Christmas barbecue in, say, Wisconsin or New York. (Although the temperature in NYC has been pretty warm lately...)

We usually have the traditional turkey dinner for Thanksgiving so by the time Christmas comes, we want something different.
We have had prime rib, duck a l'orange, lobster...
A nice gourmet BBQ sounds good to me!

I think tradition is a magnificent thing---has anyone considered having the traditional feast as well as the Bar-B-Q ? that could become a beautiful new family tradition----would please everyone----and think of the possibilities for the left overs-----say you could even invite me if you like.
