Actually, 46 States.
There are also 4 Commonwealths - Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Kentucky are not states, but Commonwealths.
Added: In common parlance, there is no difference between a Conmmonwealth and a State. True for those who do not live in the four that are Commonwealths; not so for those who do, and whoever wrote the quotation below never lived in the Commonwealth of Virginia. If you live in one of those four, your communications are from the Commonwealth of ___, not the Statre of ____. If you live in one of the four, check the letterheads on official letters. You have (at least in some) a Commonwealth's Attorney, not a District Attorney. You do not have State Police. The parlance in the Commonwealths is different. Practically, there is no difference between States and Commonwealths on a constitutional level - agreed. Common parlance - some may not make a distinction, but many do.

There are 50 states.
Alaska and Hawaii were the last two states to enter the union. They are by no means considered "new" anymore as they both joined in 1959.
The District of Columbia is not a state, but it is under the direct authority of Congress, and was established from territory ceded by the states of Maryland and Virginia, with essentially all of the Virginia cession having since been returned to state jurisdiction.
Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands are all considered U.S. territories, or, more specifically unincorporated organized territories. There are other areas claimed by the U.S.
To avoid making this post a political tangent, I won't bring up military occupation.
As for the distinction between states and commonwealths that other people have mentioned, this should help...
"Four of the constituent states of the United States officially designate themselves Commonwealths: Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. This designation, which has no constitutional impact, emphasizes that they have a 'government based on the common consent of the people' as opposed to one legitimized through their earlier Royal Colony status that was derived from the King of England. (The word commonwealth is of English derivation and refers to the common 'weal' or welfare of the public.) In common parlance, people do not make the distinction between state or commonwealth."
