I understand where you are coming from. I am a migrane sufferer as well. The thing with herbals is that they are not approved by the FDA. There is truely no way to tell what will happen while taking them and what work for some may not work for others. Also, keep a food journal as to what he eats daily. This will help you find out if the migranes are triggered from certain foods or not. I have to avoid sharp cheddar cheese, if I eat more than 2 slices, I am guaranteed a migrane. Please talk to your childs doctor and see what he recomends.

As others have mentioned -- check the usual allergens -- such as wheat, corn, cheese, citrus, which can cause migraines if someone is allergic to these foods. A migraine preventive is the herb feverfew. Read up on it. It works as a migraine is coming on, not after someone has it. Not sure what a dosage for a child might be. Visit a health food store and ask for guidance on this.

I have tried everything going for the past three decades, conventional medicine and alternative. The best was Cafergot (stops it almost immediately but leaves you feeling tired out). I've found that since I've been drinking more water, exercising more (not overexercising because that causes migraine too!) and avoiding the classic migraine triggers, I've reduced them by at least 50%. I didn't find much help from aromatherapy or massage, hydrotherapy or homeopathy.

I'm a chiropractor & often children respond well to gentle chiropractic adjustments for headaches/ migraines. Other times there may be something in his diet that is a trigger & it is very important to keep a food diary -- AND a headache diary to see how often he gets the headaches & figure out the triggers. We do this for adults too. Sometimes you can figure it out in a matter of a week or 2, other times it may take 6 or 8 weeks or longer of writing it all down to see a pattern.
Call around a few chiropractors in your area or ask a few friends & see if you can find someone who sees a fair number of children in his/her practice.
* one thing you may want to start with is to use some fish oil... the omega 3 fatty acids are good for the brain & can sometimes help migraines (and wont harm him). there is a company called nordic naturals that makes a kids chewable that is fruity you can get in most health food stores.

good luck.

Gosh that's a tough one due to his young age. You probably already know that he should avoid certain "triggers," such as chocolate, cheese or nuts. Also, seasonal allergies sometimes encourage an episode to come on. The last time I had a killer of a migraine, I made scrambled eggs and put as much hot sauce as I could stand on them. By the time I was done eating it, everything in my head just drained and I felt the migraine disappating. Maybe feed him something spicy then lay him down in a dark, cool room. Sure wish you the best.

often times children who had a difficult birth have changes in the curve of their neck that can lead to many many symptoms as they age and interact with the world. You should find a Licensed Chiropractic Physician in your area who specializes in children. don't bother with the yellow pages they are hard to decypher. online in your area a person has a website who can probably help, so search there first. the best part is that children usually respond quickly to treatment - which is nothing like what you have seen or heard about chiropractic manipulative therapy. and its safer than popping pills that is certain. if that is too much go to soothe-a-ciser dot com and get their pillow it works most of the time.. good luck

Please take the kid to see a doctor. Its could just be food allergies, but its better to seek help than ignore what might be a bigger problem. I have suffered with migraines since 5 years old, and am now finally getting treatment for it.

I use heated ginger slices
heat the ginger slices on the stove top
then apply to his head and tie a towel around his head
though the hot ginger will hurt a bit
but its an excellent remedy

What works for me is taking a shower and laying on the tub floor and letting the water massage my head. I know it sounds like it won't work and that it will make it more painful, but it doesn't! There is something about the constant pounding on my head really eases the pain.
