I think is product, because a character witness is called to say what the person is like, in the hope that a favourable report will make people (in this case a jury or judge) think well of the accused erson. A testimonial is a statement by someone who has used a product who says a similar thing (how good the product is and what its like) in the hope that it wil encourage people to buy it.
