The Taliban were harboring Ben Laden, and allowing al qaeda terrorists to train in their territory, and refused to give him up.

-----------------------------------------------
...The United States respects the people of Afghanistan -- after all, we are currently its largest source of humanitarian aid -- but we condemn the Taliban regime. (Applause.) It is not only repressing its own people, it is threatening people everywhere by sponsoring and sheltering and supplying terrorists. By aiding and abetting murder, the Taliban regime is committing murder.

And tonight, the United States of America makes the following demands on the Taliban: Deliver to United States authorities all the leaders of al Qaeda who hide in your land. (Applause.) Release all foreign nationals, including American citizens, you have unjustly imprisoned. Protect foreign journalists, diplomats and aid workers in your country. Close immediately and permanently every terrorist training camp in Afghanistan, and hand over every terrorist, and every person in their support structure, to appropriate authorities. (Applause.) Give the United States full access to terrorist training camps, so we can make sure they are no longer operating.

These demands are not open to negotiation or discussion. (Applause.) The Taliban must act, and act immediately. They will hand over the terrorists, or they will share in their fate. ...

In response to "bajricf" below, Afghanistan does not have any oil, so I fail to see how anyone thinks that oil could be a motive for the war (Iraq maybe, but Afghanistan?).

And that old conspiracy theory about the West wanting Afghanistan in order to build a pipeline through it to bring natural gas or oil from Russia, or elsewhere, seems thin too (look at a map, and you will see why). Besides, no one has tried to build one anyway, so that shoots that theory in the foot.

Was oil a key motive for the war against Iraq and Afghanistan? Is there a hidden agenda behind the "war on terrorism"? Read the evidence and decide for yourself.THE CONQUEST OF AFGHANISTAN BEGAN BEFORE 9/11

The war on Afghanistan was sold to the public as a reaction to the attacks on 11 September 2001. However, the war was planned before the infamous 9/11 disaster, and the military action began long before the World Trade Center fell.

The conquest of Afghanistan had been planned since at least 12 February 1998, and 9/11 happened just in time to secure public support for the attacks.

We didn't. We went to war with "terrorism" and intelligence revealed that a major terrorist sect, i.e. Al Qaeda, was hiding in Afghanistan. So, we didn't go to war with Afghanistan, we are just fighting a war in Afghanistan. It just so happens that it is not solely against that country.
