1) turn it into the local police?

2) put an ad in the paper not specifying details but saying something was found in the vicinity in hopes of finding the real owner?

3) keep it and cash it in?

4) other?

What would you do?

It depends on how much it was for. If it were for a very large amount, I think I'd have to go to whichever store I found it near and ask who was buying the tickets. If I couldn't figure it out that way, I would NEVER give it to the police, I might call the local news channel though. I don't think I could live with myself accepting something that I did not earn.

The ticket belongs to the person that purchased it. If the woman turns in the winning ticket and no one comes forward to dispute it, then she wins free and clear! However it would get real messy if a man comes forward and says he purchased the ticket and lost it while walking his dog in the park last week. The lottery knows exactly when and where that winning ticket was purchased. They'd pull survelliance tapes from the store and can see exactly who was standing at the counter buying the ticket. That's most likely the person that would receive the money. Honestly, if the woman waits and goes to the lottery and tells them straight up that she found the ticket I don't know what would happen if there were no other claims for it.

If someone had their name and hopefully phone number on the back, yeah I'd call them.
(Remember though folks...it is proper etiquette to reward the finder of such a return.)
If there was no info on the ticket, there is no way I'd put an ad in the paper, think of what a nightmare that would be, as no one would be able to prove ownership. So I would in that case keep it, and cash it in.

Unless the winning lottery ticket had the name of said person on the ticket, I would turn it to the local police. I know, I am so freaking honest and it sucks. but, trust me, with stores and convinient stores and even bodegas having cameras, and that the store that sold the winning ticket will know because they will get feed back, some one will find out that they lost it. They will go to that store and then, with videotape, they will find out.
So, that is what I would do.
I would hope this person would give me some type of compensation.

The odds of finding that ticket are probably greater than the odds of the person who lost it to ever find it. So.. having establised that , I would keep it, cash it, knowing that the odds of the loser finding me are greater than all the other odds together. You got that, I am glad 'cause I am lost.
