Either way, whatever I can get my hands on!!!
I'm guessing you are trying to write your own mystery, am I correct? Go with whatever seems right to you! I've read books by female authors that are about men... that are plain awful! They act... like women. But if you think you can manage a good, natural acting male, either way. I myself am an amatuer author, and I have only twice had a male main character. All the other times I make a person like me, that I can really manipulate into someone special, unique, and totally plausable!
If I'm way off, and you are just curious about other peoples reading habits, forgive my ramblings.

I read both, so long as the author is good. I prefer male detectives a little bit because they usually try to catch the crook- none of this "race against time before the killer kills the heroine for investigating." They're usually purer mystery, not crossing into thriller where the clues come together when the killer sneaks in to kill the heroine. That can be good, but I prefer reading about solving the crime without the killer's help.

Tami Hoag is good at writing with both genders in perspective. She's my favorite mystery author. I think you'd like Ashes to Ashes. (which I think took place from a females point of view) and then Dust to Dust (the sequel, and I think it takes place from a man's point of view)

I prefer reading anything about females, but then, I guess I am prejudiced, as I am a lesbian - and quite proud of it !
