I am trying to use my friends internet connection using my own laptop. The connection works well in his laptop, but when I tried to plug the LAN cable to my computer it shows that I am connected but I can't browse or surf the internet. I tried to see the settings, and it seems that I dont have a gateway address where in fact when the LAN cable is plugged to my friends computer it has a gateway address. I tried to fix this problem by manually entering the gateway address etc but it still wont work. Please help me to solve this problem.

I assume you are plugged directly into his cable/DSL modem and not into a router.

If so, you will need to reset the cable modem each time you switch computers. This is usually done by unplugging the modem for 10 seconds and then plugging it back in.

The modem will associate itself with the MAC address of whatever network device is plugged into it when it starts. It won't communicate with any other devices until it is reset.

If you got a router, then the modem would communicate with the router, and the router would be able to serve anything plugged into it without resetting. You would even be able to plug both computers in a once.

Use the gateway address from your friends computer. If that doesn't work, well then you my friend have a piece of crap laptop and you should ask your mommy or daddy to buy you a new one that works.

If your laptop is set up as a DHCP client you shouldn't be having connection problems, check that setting first. Then try rebooting his cable/DSL modem then any router (if applicable) then your laptop.
