a Faraday cage, which could just be an aluminum foil "hull".
It was discovered when they found out that radio signals weren't properly received within security vaults or so.

Besides shielding, any of the same techniques used for surge protection and lightning protection: capacitors and MOV (metal oxide varistor) devices across inputs and outputs, series resistance and inductance for external connections, and so on.
