Because of 0, we have a numeric system of putting a place value for something that's not there. We get to say 302 instead of 3 hundreds + 2 ones. It's simply convenient.
If you want an example of how life would be like without zero, ask the romans with their MCMLXXVI's. Try XVI+IX=XXV and IV+IX=XIII and stuff.

Well the number zero has been adapted into a synonym for 'nothing', 'none' and 'loser'.
