The origin of the term heavy metal in relation to a form of music is uncertain. The phrase had been used for centuries in chemistry and metallurgy and is listed as such in the Oxford English Dictionary. An early use of the term in modern popular culture was by counter-culture writer William S. Burroughs. In the 1962 novel, The Soft Machine, he introduces the character "Uranian Willy, the Heavy Metal Kid". His next novel in 1964, Nova Express, develops this theme further, heavy metal being a metaphor for addictive drugs.
With their diseases and orgasm drugs and their sexless parasite life forms — Heavy Metal People of Uranus wrapped in cool blue mist of vaporized bank notes — And the Insect People of Minraud with metal music[5]
The first recorded use of heavy metal in a song lyric is the phrase "heavy metal thunder" in the 1968 Steppenwolf song "Born To Be Wild"[6]:

Well , i think the band "Steppenwolf" was credited for coining the term "heavy metal" in the song Born To Be Wild. There was an author before that , but the term wasn't used as music related. Some of the first metal bands included Judas Priest , Black Sabbath , etc. But i don't think Zep was classified as metal , they were just plain rock.

Steppenwolf used the term "Heavy Metal Thunder" in the song Born To Be Wild in 1968.
The first time I believe it was used to term a band was in reference to an Iron Butterfly concert at Fillmore East in New York, Jan 31-Feb1, 1969. A then unknown Led Zeppelin was the opening act. IRON BUTTERFLY with Led Zeppelin - HEAVY METAL. That, at least, was the radio promo for it.

there is a movie called Metal, a headbangers journey, it will answer any question about metal, about the first band to create metal, well it was a kind of evolution from a lot of other styles and to name one band that created "Metal" is too debatable. check out the movie though

The first mainsteam metal bands are not hard at all by today's standards, but were extremely heavy for their time. Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin are the two that come to mind offhand.

Probably Deep Purple (1967), but you can trace a line back in the history of metal to the raucous fuzz-toned guitar of Dave Davies of the Kinks, then back to Link Wray, the inventor of the power chord in the late 1950s, and even further back to Herbert Sumlin, the genius guitarist for Howlin' Wolf.

It's very hard indeed to draw the line between hard rock and heavy metal... Still: sources I've read so far in my record-buying lifetime all agree that the very first HEAVY METAL album to be released was Black Sabbath's self-titled debut in 1970.
