You see the hippies was an era of social revolution , a change of moral standards and the beliefs of our parents , the hippies became well established in the early 70,s amidst the Vietnam war that was rely hated , the young people of that era wanted to escape somehow the rules of the status quo and liquor was passe , so they began experimenting with soft drugs like marijuana , at the same time besides expressing free sexuality love , peace , they were looking for a different stile of living , which they found in the spiritualistic American Indian , so the combination of the sikadelic euforia of the drugs , colors and forms were very expressive and they mixed it with the Indian clothing stile , deriving to the so famous hippy....Cinse the groups of young people were relatively poor , because work was unwanted , they wanted freedom in all areas and responsibility was not in the vocabulary , they would buy or make very light cheap clothing , then dip them in bats of tint of different colours , once it was unwrapped and dried the clothing hat a multitude of colours and lines , and in many places the trend continues .

I have a friend that came up with fluorescent colors on his hair, I asked him; "What hapened with your hair?" He answered "dare to be different" that triggered a coment... "Dare to be better, and then you will be different with a real purpose in life". People want to be different just for the sake of it, but many don't want to put the effort of being different by being better
The hippies just wanted to be different in a way that would seem the most disgusting to society. Their main motivator was rebelion, and based on that, is how they made their decisions as to how they should look; homeless, dirty, drugadicts, sexual promiscuity, unconventional clothing, etc.
