why are boards nailed diagonally in the corners of wooden gate makes...i know they are so that the gate is stronger and prevents a gate/bridge from changing its shape under stress...but what about the boards being nailed diaganolly makes it effective?

..this is a question that was brought up during my honors geo trig class today.....................jw =]

This was described empirically in the following specification:

http://www.awc.org/pdf/NDSCommentaryCompressed/Part12NailsandSpikespp140to149.pdf

It has to do with the orientation of the nail with respect to the grain of the wood. A nail in end grain, or parallel to the grain, is less than half as strong as a diagonal nail.

If you draw a free-body diagram of the nail, understanding that the force transfer of the wood is through the grain fibers in either direction, the fibers grip more nail at an angle. Also, the force transfer is more in shear with the nail, and the fibers are in tension versus just a frictional tension.
