take the whole world as it is tday, take away all the people in the world ,you have wild life ,nature and industry left, now take away nature, you are left with wildlife and industry, now take away wildlife. Now you are left with land and no life!! Take away all the sea's and all the land, your left with the world. Take away the world and you are left with the universe. Take away all the stars planets and galaxies in the universe and you are left with space, My question is... Take away the space and what are you left with?? Is there anyone else who has ever thought of this?

My first guess, if you were to take away space, you are left only with nothing, (space being the thing in what matter exists), and not even that would be left - a complete void.

Another idea that sprung into my mind is that if you took away space, all that would be left is time. There is nothing that would exist, but time would still pass normally.

Good question though!

OK, if that bugs you, try this one. Get a box. Take everything out of the box. Now take everything that is left in the box out. Do it again a few times.

Or even better, go outside and dig a hole. Now, right in the middle of the hole (at the top of the hole, not the bottom), dig another hole. Then dig another hole.

Space is the absence of other things. You can't take it away.

By the way, you have some other problems if you think that you can take away people and leave industry, or that you can take away nature and leave wildlife, or that you can take away the land and seas and leave the world.

There would still be industry because you said " take the whole world as it is tday, take away all the people in the world ,you have wild life ,nature and industry left, now take away nature, you are left with wildlife and industry, now take away wildlife " so i guess your still left with industry.

You take everything away and you are left with nothing.

And you're surprised by this?

Or are you asking 'ooh, the universe is a huge and wonderful place full of complexity but before it came into being, what the hell was there'? Yup, sure is a puzzler.

There are a number of theories, such as the 'big bang'. There are also people who argue that we don't yet have a satisfactory mathematical model that we can work with to explain it.

This is separate from the numerous religio/philosophical concepts of the origins of the universe.

So, yes, lots of people have (and are) thinking of this but as for an answer, the jury is still out on this one I'm afraid!

No, there will not be an endless vacuum left; well, not according to Einstein.

Space is only present when there is matter and energy in it. Take them away, and there is no space.

That is hard for us to imagine, but the human brain cannot conceive of everything. We use electricity even though nobody can picture an electron.

If Einstein showed mathematically that space only exists while there is matter and energy in it, then it does not really matter whether we can picture that - even Einstein would not have been able to picture it - we are 3-D beings and cannot picture what the other dimensions would look like even though we can define them mathematically.

Don't beat yourself up about something that nobody can picture.

You can't take a vacuum away. Vacuum is nothing from what I undertand. So once you take away the stars, planets, etc, you are left with nothing, which can also be called an endless vacuum or space. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, it's been a while since I've studied these topics.

Have to disagree with the chap who said nobody has ever thought about this. Lots have puzzled over the question of what IS space.

If you take out space (to be consistent with what we know about it thanks to Einstein you'd have to take out 4 dimensional spacetime) you'd have nothing. Space isn't quite empty though, its full of quantum foam - tiny vacuum fluctuations with particles popping in and out of existence and shuffling back and forward in time, sounds far out but thats what happens. There may be higher dimensions - as many as another 6 but if you take 'space' away they'll be gone too.

The entirety of all things is so big for the human mind to comprehend, that's why millions of scientists are still in pursue of the greatest question raised - where did humans come from? Surely, getting the answer to that question opens up the possibilities of getting the answers to a lot of other.

According to Einstein; everything in the known universe is relative

Therefore Bobs your uncle no matter whatever is subtracted from the universe.
This can be represented by the formula;

mother+son/father+daughter= inbred son

what a scary thought... from what i know, isn't space already nothing??
you would be left with just the endless vacuum of space. This is just my ticking that goes on in my head, consult an expert before placing bets! :)
