1. The Cairo Trilogy by Naguib Mahfouz
2. A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth
3. The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark
4. The Sword of Honour Trilogy by Evelyn Waugh
5. Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell, etc.

Check out some of Debbie McComber's books. She is a great writer and her books are easy to read and you can identify with the characters in every one of her books. Start with "Thursdays at 8".
