one makes images seem smaller (Concave) (think of rearview mirror on the passenger side of the car. and the other makes images seem wider (convex) (think of the fun house mirrors in cartoons and at the carnival.) the reason why they change the view is because the lenses are altered to instead of being flat they are rounded.

convex looks like the back of a spoon and spreads light as it passes through.
concave looks like the bowl portion of the spoon(caved in) and converges light as it passes through
