Personally I don't think God is male or female. But the Bible (written by men) refers to God in the male gender. When the Bible was written the "father" was the "head" of the family. God is the "head" of all mankind. The words used in the Bible had to be understandable to human beings, most of us cannot (then or now)imagine an entity that has no sexuality...God is beyond our capacity of reasoning. The Bible would not have been understandable if it said God was non-sexed, people would have consider that to mean "Eunuch", which translate into "powerless"

I think you have to consider the culture of the time when scriptures were written. It was a male dominated society with the paternal member being the provider, teacher and leader of the family unit. This being said, it would have been a blow to the male ego of the time to have "god" be female. Whether you choose to believe in god's existence or not, the religions of the world were dominated by men because they were "at that time" the stronger sex. Women did not supposedly lead the family so to be a part of god's family where "he" was the head of household, one would be forced into believing that god was male. To think anything else "at that time" would have been blasphemous at the very least.

It is not an assumption on our part. Yahweh spoke to and physically met with Adam, Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Joshua, Gideon, Solomon, Isaiah, and Ezekiel.
During his first encounter, Moses asked God, Whom shall I say sent me? God told Moses his name, which is "Yahweh".
Nobody questions the gender of Iēsous. He walked the face of the earth, and I along with 90 some % of America are about to celebrate his birth.

It probably has something to do with the fact that men were often the only ones in a society that were literate, and they were responsible for transcribing and/or translating the bible. They altered things to fit their societies, and having a female in power was mostly (if not entirely) unheard of.

Because the Bible refers to God as He.
It was propehsied (told before it happened) that Mary would give birth to a SON.
That HE would be the SON of God.
That the government would be upon HIS shoulders.
Mary gave birth to a SON.
HE was betrayed.
HE was crucified.
HE arose from the grave.
HE is seated at the right hand of the Father. Not the right hand of the Mother.
If we ask forgiveness, HE is fatihful and just to forgive us our sins.
HE is coming again.
We pray OUR FATHER
Not our Mother!
Jesus Himself referred to God as the FATHER. Not the mother.

I don't think it is an assumption. If you are referring to God in the Bible, I would imagine it is because the Bible refers to God as masculine. Jesus refers to him as Father. I could only conclude that a Father would be masculine as well.

Who's assuming? The Bible says it. Saying God is a female would be the assumption.
