This must refer to the period before the Turks conquored it, and long before the Turks re-named it in the twentieth century to Istanbul. Also, the Ottoman nickname - The Porte - is probably out. Try try Golden Horn - which also refers to the bay on which the city is situated.

I get so tired of people in this forum giving half-assed answers just to get their lousy two points. If you don't know the correct answer, either do the research or don't answer the question.
For instance, "Istanbul" is not a nickname. It is the Turkish name for the city. "Constantinople" was the Greek name, meaning "City of Constantine." When the Ottomans (Turks) conquered the city in 1453 they changed the name to Istanbul, although people in the west continued to call the city Constantinople until the new name became "official" in 1930. Similarly, the city has been called "Byzantium," "Stamboul," "Tsargrad," etc., depending on the time period and who was doing the naming.
The problem is none of those are nicknames. A city nickname would be something like "The Big Apple," for New York, or "The City of Lights," for Paris. Constantinople has had several nicknames over the years, including "The City on Seven Hills," which ties it to Rome, which of course is "The City of Seven Hills." The most common nickname, however, was "The Queen of Cities," as it was known throughout the Middle Ages, because it was the largest and richest city in Europe. Even today it is the second largest in Europe and one of the twenty largest metropolitan areas in the world.
