I just got a new male betta fish and for some reason he sits upsidedown with his head in the rocks and his body straight up...is that normal?

It could be an infection. Start by checking the WATER. Get a water test kit. Make sure you do weekly water changes. Betta's need warm water too........at least 75 to 80 degrees. I keep mine at 78. You could also add MELAFIX to the water. It's an antibacterial fish remedy. You can pick it up at Petsmart or wal-mart. The Betta's like calm water too. If you have a powered filter, try turning the power down a little. ALSO, when you do water changes, make sure you use Stress Coat or Aquasafe in the fresh water. This stuff makes tap water safe for fish.

wow, that's really weird. maybe he finds it comfortable? this one really stumps me if you say he eats fine and swims fine. he's most likely not sick or anything then. does he stay in that position for a while? or is he just picking at the rocks? he could be looking for food if he's picking at them. if he's staying like that still for ahwile my guess would be the cup you bought him in was taller and thinner and he did it for comfort. he may grow out of it, he may not. either way as long as you're taking care of him and he eats and swims I wouldn't worry about it.

what sized tank you you have him in, bettas should be in a tank with a filter and heater. they can survive in bowls if you change them frequently but they won't enjoy it. if you give your betta a 5gallon tank with a filter and heater and put in a bunch of plants and things for him to explore he'll probably spend more time swimming around and exploring and hiding and will stop sitting like that. if you already have him in a tank with a filter and such congrats on making a good choice for your betta. if you don't I really suggest getting an ammonia test kit and test his water every day, then change it as soon as there is any fluctuation.

good luck!

Bettas *can* survive in just a bowl, you don't need all that crap the person before me posted. It's highly likely if your betta is eating and swimming fine that he is just resting when he does that. most like to just lay at the top of the water. put a mirror beside the tank and watch him :)

It is not natural for bettas to sit upside down. You might want to check with local pet shop or something. And please don't keep bettas in a small bowl. They can survive in it and it might look cute but it is depressing. Give him room and plants and hiding places....
