Well, most don't refuse to be gay or lesbian, but the ones who do usually do it do so because it can be pretty hard to be homosexual in today's society. They can 'refuse' it because:
1) They are religious and feel it is wrong, a sin, etc..
2) They are in denial and believe they are truly straight, but just confused, in a phase, or so on.
3) They want to have a 'normal' life, feeling that a straight life is that.
4) They realize and know that many gay people are the recipients of discrimination, hate, homophobia, and even violence. They try to avoid their sexual orientation if it means being subjected to that.
And so on. But know that a lot of people do happily accept their sexual orientation and are out and proud about it.

Mostly because of the stigma placed on being homosexual in society. Have you seen the hate posted even in this catagory? Can you blame some for staying in the closet when they would have to face those jerks all the time?
