Basically in your case its to step down the voltage on the table lamp. the benefit is to reduce the physical size of the bulb and this enables the manufactures to create more appealing lamps for the designers.

A transformer is a means of increasing or decreasing electrical voltage. On a small scale, like a table lamp, a transformer can be used to lower the voltage level at the lamp, say from 240V to 24V, to make it safer for the user. Voltage is the driving force behind electricity, like water pressure is the driving force behind your shower. So the lower the voltage (or 'Water Pressure'), the less capable it is to drive current (or 'water flow') through a resistance e.g. your body if you were to touch the live cables(or 'Holes in the shower head'). Or, if you like, the lower the water pressure in your house ('voltage') and the smaller the holes in the shower head ('resistance'), the less likely you are to get wet under the shower (reduced water flow - 'current'). Hope this makes some sort of sense!

A transformer is device that transfers electric energy from one alternating-current circuit to one or more other circuits, either increasing (stepping up) or reducing (stepping down) the voltage. Transformers are employed for widely varying purposes; e.g., to reduce the voltage of conventional power circuits to operate low-voltage devices, such as doorbells, alarm clocks, radios, table lamps etc.

A transformer is basically used for either stepping up or down the voltage coming into it., like low voltage things. They come in all different sizes. Merry Christmas
