First, you are assuming that he did not discover America. That is not a wholly correct assumption. Columbus's voyages led others to come to the new world...aka America.
Second, the stories of vikings, chinese, etc., coming to America first have been thrown out of the scientific realm of possibilities. While they are not proven false, the evidence suggesting they are true has been shown to be false.
So, for what we know, to the best of our knowledge, Columbus was the first European to discover America. Thus, we celebrate Columbus.

I don't know why we still celebrate it, but the truth is that Christopher Columbus was a very mean man too. He tortured many of the native Indians that lived here. I did a whole report on this last year, but I'm not going into detail about that.

I think you got your facts wrong...he did discover "the Americas".
Christopher Columbus sailed from Spain across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492, landing in the "new world" of the Americas and gaining lasting fame. Financed by Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castille, Columbus sailed west in search of a sea passage to India. His mission was twofold: open trade routes for exploitation and bring the word of Jesus Christ to the uninitiated. He sailed with three ships (the Niña, Pinta and Santa Maria) in 1492 and made landfall somewhere in the Bahamas. He returned to Europe to spread the word, and was named "Admiral of the Ocean Seas" by Ferdinand and Isabella. He made three more voyages in the following years, always believing that he had reached Asia, and his success opened the door for Spain to conquer the Americas. Five centuries after his daring voyage, Columbus is still famous but is also the subject of heated discussions about whether he was a good-guy hero who discovered new worlds or a not-so-nice guy who helped grab the Americas from their native inhabitants. Still, he has long been known as the man who "discovered" America, and the second Monday in October is celebrated as Columbus Day in the United States.
Extra credit: Columbus is also known as Cristobal or Christobal Colon (in Spanish) and Cristoforo Colombo (in Italian)... America is named for Amerigo Vespucci, who explored what is now South America a few years after Columbus's initial voyage.
Other legendary explorers include Marco Polo, Ferdinand Magellan, Roald Amundsen and Jacques Cousteau.
I agree with you, We as American shouldn't celebrate his day.

While we realize that other people visited this continent before Columbus, it was Columbus who brought Europeans to "the new world" (whose descendants founded the US). Columbus was the catalyst for huge changes in the way the people of the time saw the world and it opened up incredible opportunities. His "discovery" began a new way of life.

The fact that Europe think their explorer, Christobal Colon was the man that discovered America. Is just one of the lies perpetuated through His-Story. Christobal was not a navigator he was a con-man and very persuasive with the Queen of Spain. He wrecked the first ship in Barbados; it took 4 years of enslavement and maimed Indians to build another ship for him to go and lie for money and another ship. Of course he received praise, but the fact still remains: He was LOST, so lost that he when made it to Cuba he tried to kill all of them. But thank God, the Taino Indians still exist today. My Grandfather was a Taino, Road Scholar who came to North American as a student but also earned his citizenship and fought in WWII. The Indian blood of his people as well as cherokee, cocktaw, and gulla are in me. Anyway, when the Bering strait's land was still above water, there where tribes of color that had already reached America. In Mexico, there are people who are of African descent with black skin and thick hair. These are the same people that Chiconos deny being a part of them. In short they are a part of the indians that Christobal and his spinards tried to murdered. They were sweet, loving and friendly; they ran out to greet them instead they were murdered, maimed and enslaved. This issue goes way back to the time when the Africans(Moors and other tribes) took over the Meditterean, Italy, Spain(6 centuries), Portugal and France. The mixture of Indians and african are through the world is evident. The north/south/carribean american indians are the true Americans. Color was not an issue into the slave trade and the money that could be made came into existence. North American Indians could not and some would not be enslaved that's why the european in north america went to the carribean and shipped in 'season' slaves. One thing that can be truly attributed to Christobal, he started slavery on this side of the world and brought to Spain evidence of gold, and other items and slaves. Everyone need to disspell the lies for example: In African they had slaves, when they took over the tribe's area; that tribe would assimulate and become one. It was not until the creation of the Slave triangle that even the Africans understood the money that could be made. Wow!! The love of money is the root of all evil/lies/deception.
