It means that bird will get the reward before other birds, but yep, that poor worm, if it gets up early, it gets eaten.

The moral,
if you are a bird get up early,
if you are a worm, stay in bed.

It means I get the last bit of milk for my cuppa tea in the mornings because I'm the only one who can get into work on time.!! Everyone else suffers the coffee withdrawl till the milkman comes.
