I love this song, but am not sure why she refers to it as a "hard candy Christmas". Does anyone know?

Hard Candy Christmas
By Dolly Parton

Hey, maybe I’ll dye my hair
Maybe I’ll move somewhere
Maybe I’ll get a car
Maybe I’ll drive so far
They’ll all lose track
Me, I’ll bounce right back

Maybe I’ll sleep real late
Maybe I’ll lose some weight
Maybe I’ll clear my junk
Maybe I’ll just get drunk on apple wine
Me, I’ll be just

Fine and dandy
Lord, it’s like a hard candy Christmas
I’m barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won’t let
Sorrow bring me way down

I’ll be fine and dandy
Lord, it’s like a hard candy Christmas
I’m barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won’t let
Sorrow get me way down

Hey, maybe I’ll learn to sew
Maybe I’ll just lie low
Maybe I’ll hit the bars
Maybe I’ll count the stars until dawn
Me, I will go on

Maybe I’ll settle down
Maybe I’ll just leave town
Maybe I’ll have some fun
Maybe I’ll meet someone
And make him mine
Me, I’ll be just

Chorus

A hard candy Christmas is when the family is so poor that all they could afford was a penny bag of hard candy to give their kids. Yes, this actually used to be a Christmas treat, and still is to some, but that's in addition to other treats. And the kids in that family would love it because that would be the ONLY time of the year the family could splurge on something like candy.

The literal translation would be that the family is so poor that all it can afford to give the kids for Christmas is "Hard Candy", (i.e. ribbon candy, candy canes, etc.). What it means is that it is a great disappointment. And it s not because Dolly and Burt broke up. It s because they are being forced to close down the Whore-house and everyone is put out on the street. Not just Dolly, but all the girls join in to sing this tear-jerker.

If you look at the lyrics, you can see that she is trying to dicide. Maybe I ll dye my hair. Maybe I ll move somewhere. Maybe I ll get a car. Maybe...Maybe...maybe.... Remember the bowls of hard candy for Christmas? One would stand over it a look at all the pieces and try to figure out which one they wanted. Maybe this one, Maybe that one or the one under there. Decisions, desisions.

has to do with the candy being hard, cause most candy for xmas is hard...aka candy canes, suckers, etc.
