Seriously people, using the term "African-American" when referring to Black people is politically incorrect. I have a Jamacian friend who really gets a kick out of that...he is black and certainly not African...so what the heck??

I'm struck by how so many people here are focusing on the "African" part, when the real error is often in "American." After all, not everyone of African descent lives in America. Your Jamaican friend is also probably not "American" either, except in the sense of the American continents. Oh, the wonderful ways in which we Statesters sometimes can't see past our borders...

Of course, it's also frustrating that we group together an entire continent into that one word, whereas white Americans get to say "Oh, I'm half-Irish and a quarter German," etc.

I get so mad when people call me African American. People like Charlize Theron are African Americans(She was born in raised in South Africa). I'm Black it a huge difference. I may have some African blood in me but I was born in African and I don't know waht African Nation my Ancestors came from. Descendats of the slaves in America are mixed with African, Native American, White, and Latin. So were basically just like Hispanics, we're almost everything. I love Africa and I wish I can visit someday but I will never be an African American.

"most" people of color are of African descent. they can be Cubans, Jamaicans, Haitians, Egyptians, Mexicans, etc. thus when you see a black person who was born in America we become African Americans. apparently you aren't African-American, at least don't look it by your avatar why the concern of us being called African Americans and it being politically incorrect. and by the way what political correct term do you call yourself? just asking.

It doesn't make sense. Many black americans are not african, nor can they trace their roots there. The original black people in america were slaves, who were from africa. So i guess the term stuck. (although- those from west indies, jamaica, etc... originally were from africa, brought in by spanish or whoever's slave trade). simple answer would be- dont categorize. why say black, spanish, white, etc..? Just say person- b/c that is what e/o is, a human being.

i rly consider african americans africans brought over from slave times, if there some that are a generation or two from jamaica or haiti i don't consider them afrcian-american. black is not exactly formal, but fine. or just try saying their Jamaican, with no mention of africa or anything

That's true, all black people aren't African. We should let everyone make up their own nationality name, it's not cool being labeled.
