A couple of days. The judge needs to sign a Temporary Order first, then you will be Served, usually by a Marshall or Deputy. Or, if its a domestic violence case, they will give it to you in Court. Then the Temp. order, and this is if you were'nt already served with the Temp. Order, will run out, 30-45 days. There will be a court date on it, in which you can appear to defend yourself against the Permament Order, which usually lasts from 3-5 years. You make somebody mad?

As soon as you know about it you have been "served". Courts have held that even tho the police did not deliver it yet, when the girlfriend called and informed him of a restraining order and he came over and harassed her even tho not yet acctually served, that the phone "notice" was sufficient to constitute knowingly and intentionally violating the order! Or as soon as the police can get it to you.

It must be served by private process server, sheriff or constable. They will find you and serve you personally with the restraining order. If you run or hide from them, they will publish it in the newspaper and you will be considered served.
