If backfiring on accell its something to do with ign timing or valve timing. I've seen some engines wear the cam out and they backfire on accell .Or it could have jumped a tooth on the timing chain.Your sure the wires from the dist are all correct.Check the dist cap for moisture or being worn out . If its backfiring on decell it more than likely an exhaust leak or the carb dripping gas on decell filling the exhaust then going off. I would check for exhaust leak first if on decell

Thru the exhaust or carb ?Thru the carb indicates a fuel issue &
thru the exhaust would be igition problems.

Put a timing light on it and see timing is off.
