In Japan, you'll have a higher salary, but in Korea you'll save more money because the cost of living is lower. However, 1.8 million won is really low. You should try to find a higher paying job than that. All in all, I like Japan better because I think the living conditions are better. If you play it safe, I still think you'll save more in Korea.

If your goal is to save money, 250,000Yen in japan is not going to allow you to save much! If you have a $400 a month room, it's going to be a piece of crap! Even a small single apartment in tokyo/yokohama goes for at least 80,000Yen per month. Something $400 a month is certainly NOT an apartment, it's a room. You may not even have a private bath. Do you know the details? Be VERY weary of any school that hires you and includes your housing. It's often a scam! They will deduct the rent, utilities, etc. from your monthly salary and if you don't like the working conditions and want to change jobs (and there are A LOT of bad ESL schools in japan!) likely you will find in the contract that you sign, that they can take 3-4 months of your salary! You will find that your stereotype of the "honest japanese" will go out the window REAL fast!
I don't know about teaching in Korea, but certainly the cost of living is cheaper than japan. Plus the women look better! But I guess that won't do you any good!

Hey, you might get a bit biased answers for this question because there is racial tension between the two countries. Like that previous answer "koreans are poor, etc etc". That was probably answered by a japanse person. Actually, korea is doing pretty well considering its not even half the size of japan and it has a huge hold on economy.
But it is true that the cost of living is cheaper in korea but it is exciting to travel there.I also like japan cos the culture is rich of tradition and it is very fun there.
I've been to both countries but I think it's up to you. Better go earlier where you'll be offered more money because the english teachers being hired are reducing in asia.

I don't know how much expensive to live in Japan with that salary, but I can say if you go to Korea, at least half of your salary you can save without being a penny pincher. ( Haha! who said Korea is cheaper? Accomodation is very expensive as Japan as I know. ) 1.8 mil won's contract?? hm... little bit lower than usual ones. Usually they offer 2.0~2.2 mil won in Seoul.
One of avobe person mentioned Korea as a bad place to be with bad ppl. Fair enough! It is Japan section.
Do you think Japan is wonderful place without any problems?
OH, then go to Japan. Or as one of aobe person said go to Korea and save a lot of money after that go to WONDERFUL Japan. And have some awsome time!!!
Oh! I wonder how much money you can save up cuz " " Korea has such a great shopping places. you got to buy something. " "
I know little bit of differnces between two countries, but I don't even wannt say it.
Dear asker, I hope you get nice boss and find nice contract wherever you go. Many of contract providing your accomodation but if you are not happy, you can find better place with extra monthly renting fee. I mean in Korea.
To regerugged:
I will be shamed if I were you to say about history how your anssestors tortured when they reign them. You better be careful when you travel asia for that kind of reasons. They still remember execpt you guys. That what happend before will never be erased between ppl.
If I were you, I will be shu* *p.
You should keep smiling and just be happy with your WONDERFUL WORLD.

obviously from all the other answers you can see that this is subject to opinion! one point i would like to make is...
in korea a lot of the business men can be really dodgy and whoever you work for you are just a money making tool for them, and most will try to swindle you out of money at every opportunity and a lot of what they tell you is simply a blatant lie!! i have worked two jobs in korea and know a lot of people over here who would agree! i would suggest ONLY looking at public school work!
I have only been to japan once but some of the people i met seemed a lot happier with there situation. some had been working there seven or so years!! the cost of living is a lot more but i know people who have come to korea to save up money and gone home with less than they came with because they had to go home early and didnt get all the money they were promised.
in short my answer is korea is a lot better for the money but thats because people dont want to work for koreans. if your 100% sure of a job in korea take it... it might be worth flying here and looking for work when you get here! i would suggest looking for about 2mill as well, if its money you need.

I calculated my credit card debt a while ago and hey, you're pretty good! Mine is worst than that.
I would go to Korea. Cost of living in Japan is very expensive.

Is it hard to earn 250,000 yen(about USD2.200) /month in your country?
Anyway, I think Korea is better. I mean if you were in Tokyo, you wouldn't stop shopping.
Save money in S.Korean and clear whole debt first, then come to Japan for sightseeing.

You will love either one. I have been to both and loved them.
I like Japan better for food, people, and scenery. However, Japan is more expensive.
NOTE: It is best to live OUTSIDE of Tokyo or Seoul if you are going to teach or live there.

I prefer Japan and the Japanese people over Korea and the Koreans. Korea is a poor country and is much closer to the kook in North Korea.
