Try to do a scan disk and a disk defrag found in your system tools under accessories. You didn't mention whether you did a spy scan and a virus scan while you were in safe mode if so then try a system restore and click a date prior to when the problem occurred. If that doesn't work try to get your hands on a windows start up disk, if not you probably will have to do a hard drive reformat! Good Luck!

Yikes... Well the virus messed with the registry. The area for the task manager is HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies\ System. There's likely a value next to "DisableTaskMgr" and that's the problem there. On some systems it does take a month and a day for safe mode to load (or it feels like it) but if you're able to get the message doing a CTRL ALT DEL it would suggest that it is in Safe Mode... you're just not seeing anything at all on the desktop. How opposed are you to a fresh install of windows? =) Actually, does it still start normally?

Sounds like you have a bad driver trying to load or malware stopping your computer from running. enter safemode and run msconfig (start button->run->msconfig) start eliminating startup programs one by one until you are able to boot, then figure out what the program you eliminated last is part of.
Good luck

Do you remember what program you installed last time?? OR what hardware you installed last time?? if you installed anything then uninstall in safe mode and then restart.
OR
Try to load last good known configuration http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307852

It sounds like some critical files are corrupted, your best best bet is to reinstall your OS. (Operating System.)
