first the pcm is a type of engine management which means it controls engine and trans (power-train control module) ecm controls just the engine. the pcm/ecm is basically a voltmeter with built in logic to monitor different engine sensors mainly emissions related sensors like O2 sensor, mass air flow. throttle position sensor are just a few . the pcm/ecm job is to try to maintain a optimal air/fuel ratio around 14.7 to 1 that is its main purpose
