I have spanish as a second lunguage corse for highschool and I have never taken the class like i take the rest of mine (seriously)
when my teacher (who is white, not that it matters) called my mom and told me I was going to fail his class unless i pass the final exam
my mom was very upset. when she asked my why do i always slack off in his class i told her " I dont realy care about spanish the language is boring and hard to understand any way." also "i have little to no intrest in mexican culture so why would i want to learn spanish anyway?"
she looked at me as if i just called God an asshole. she and my dead dad lived in mexico for like 4 years and have a lot of mexican friends and speak it fluently, and became shocked that her son did not like it.
when i complained to my brother and friends they thought i was racist against mexicans!! i told them just because I dont care about their culture dosent mean im racist does it? i dont hate it i just dont care. what do you think?

No you aren't racist. Just because i'm not taking classes on Chinese language doesn't mean I hate Chinese people. And just because I have no interest in African languages doesn't mean I hate black people. Don't let anyone scare you into thinking you're racist, they're the ones with the prejiduces.

You aren't necessarily racist, but it depends on WHY you're not interested in Mexican culture.
Quick, without thinking, picture a Mexican. Now freeze frame that image and your response to it.
Did you picture a specific person? a friend? a faceless day laborer or maid? a celebrity? What was your reaction to the image? positive? detached? did you picture someone you feel is inferior or hostile to you in some way?

Your honest answer will give you an idea if you bear any racist feelings or beliefs. If you do, you should work on overcoming those beliefs, and realizing that the whole group can't be defined by a certain subset.

If your picture and response was positive, congratulations, you probably aren't racist, and are just neutral towards the Hispanic culture. In this case you should probably switch to another language that interests you more - if your school doesn't offer anything else, request to take a course at a nearby college that offers a wider variety of languages. Learning another language and culture is very important, so you should make the effort to become familiar with a group/language that is different from your own.

Also, maybe you don't like this class because you have a problems learning languages - my mother and brother have an auditory learning disability that makes it difficult for them to process certain sounds. My brother studied sign language instead. Present this idea to your parents and teachers, and get tested. Special tutoring can be a big help - my mom is tone-deaf and can't speak anything but English, but my brother got special ed, majored in music, and now lives abroad and can speak Austrian and Turkish.

I dont blame you one bit. I am a sophomore in high school and currently enrolled in Latin 2. People sometimes give me crap for taking Latin a "dead language" instead of Spanish "the future".

I take Latin because I am much more interested in Roman History and culture than Mexican culture. I would also rather learn a language that can help me with vocabulary and on the SATs. In addition, it gives me knowledge that will be useful when I become a historian.

You are not racist for having different interests than your parents. That would be if you liked football and they liked baseball and you were called a racist for not liking baseball. Its an absurb claim.

You are not a racist. Why? Well, I have no interest in Spanish either, but that doesn't mean I hate Spanish speaking people. I have many Mexican friends, even though I hate hearing Spanish. I understand you to the fullest, so don't worry, you are no racist.

I don´t think you are a racist. I think you can see only a few inches ahead, and cannot see the real world. The 80% of mankind communicate through 5 languages: Chinese, Hindi, English, Spanish, Russian and Arab. In that order. You speak English as your mother tongue. Choose another one to be able to communicate. I hope you will be a successful businessman... But if you want to sell many thing to many people... a second language will be useful.

First of all not all Spanish class is not just learning about Mexican culture it's about learning all Hispanic cultures. And I don't think that was racist at all. I'm not really interested in Mexican culture either, whenever people talk about Latinos they always talk about Mexico. What about El Salvador? The Dominican Republic? Nicaragua? Peru? Costa Rica? Colombia?

P.S. I'm a Black Domincan myself whose talking Spanish class.

U were a little racist there but not too bad. U did have a right to say U thought it was hard to understand. and U R not an actual racist since U have Mexican friends. Try learning it on your own time.

I forgot to mention I am re-teaching myself Spanish. It's easy. Just get a Spanish-English dictionary & U R ready.

I don't think you are a racist. I'd just call you apathetic because you don't care. Sometimes parents & other people don't understand when a person chooses not to do the same things that they have done or that they want to do. You can learn Spanish when you feel like it & if you feel like it. You will still have to hear them b*tch about it. That's just a part of life. I'm guessing that you are the "baby" & they have dreams for your future. Let them know that it is YOUR future & not theirs!

You do not seem to like English any better to be your chosen language either... I think Spanish could open opportunities for you, at least in the Texas border patrol. After all, life is not all about partying, you must give some thought to your future occupation too. If you do not like Mexican culture maybe you can help them to praise it in their own country...?

you'll have long past to the precept, and give an explanation for that this man is bothering you making racist accusations in opposition to you and to others like your academics all considering you don't desire to supply him the time of day.`Now; whilst doing this you ought to difference your wording to exclude BLACK your utilizing it as a label. ie. the massive black boy, sub is a black woman. What you need to use is that this individual or this man, and this instructor, or this sub instructor...I don't see you as a racist, however instead as a descriptive label-er. And that is traditionally unsuitable for racism considering in a small manner it's racism. Quit utilizing labels, like I'm Mexican. Yes; you're, however don't say so. You are a individual; a feminine, a woman who wants to not speak with this man to your possess time that is your proper. and also you desire to not be pestered by way of this individual upon your go back to tuition. you have got to give an explanation for in your precept that that is your desire and in those phrases, with out utilizing labels Then it's going to be the accountability; of the precept to be certain that a feminine scholar isn't being troubled or pestered, or sexually confused by way of a male scholar. And;that is the best way your going to have got to speak, in the event you desire to stick in tuition.
