Back in the 80's and 90's the US was a melting pot. People were coming to this country to make their lives better for themselves and their children. They wanted to be US citizens and were doing the right things to attain that classification. I dont think that is happening so much anymore. It is more about making money through a business (since they dont pay taxes for the first 10 years) and sending it back home.

We are now diverse, blending cultures and races, and co-existing but in my eyes things are more a boiling point than either a melting pot or a mosaic. There is an underlying current about to make itself known and people better be ready for it.

I was reading a book on Canada about the country, the society and whatnot. They said how Canada was a mosaic and contrasted it with U.S., which is a melting pot.

The US WAS a melting pot. Until immigrants began thinking that they could keep their cultures and languages from the 'old country'. But as we become more and more Balkanized, we break down as a unified culture of our own.

It used to be a melting pot, because immigrants adopted American values and wanted to become Americans.

These days, I think it's more like a salad bowl. We're all mixed together, but everyone wants to keep their cultural identity. Personally, I think this is one incident where a salad is not the healthier option.
