You can get the ones that go over you ears and not in your ears. Most gun stores should sell them.

If the job will allow different types of earplugs to be used try a brand called "Macs Earplugs". They are made of a malleable silicone material and are really very comfortable. They also seem to fit better since they mold more easily to your ear canal.
My hubby snores really loud and I have worn Macs every night for more then 5 years. I had the same problem with the regular foam earplugs as you. After wearing those for a few hours my ears would just kill me. A friend turned me on to Macs Earplugs and I've used them ever since.
You can get Macs Earplugs at almost any drug store and Wal-Mart sells them too.
Try Macs...They are great ( and NO I don't work for the company LOL )...good luck

There are tons of different kinds of earplugs our there. Try www.discountsafetygear.com. they have all sorts there. Make sure that they have the proper decibal protection. There are many foam kinds that are less abrasive that the generic "rubber" kind. If you aren't wearing a hard hat, you might also look at getting the earmuff type of sound dampeners. These fit over your ears (basically like the old style headphones) and work pretty well. Again, it depends on your environment and the amount of noise that you have to block out.
Ask your employer to try a few different types. They need to provide you with proper safety equipment to do your job!
Best of luck!

There are many different kinds of earplugs, check with your safety department, they may have alternatives. If not, go on line and type "Safety Supplies." Also consider ear muffs they will reduce the noise but do not go in the ear.

There are several different kinds of ear plugs. You will probably have to do a bit of shopping to find the ones that works for you. Even when you find some it will probably take you a few days to get used to them.

You could probably wear the headphone-style protectors---check with HR or the safety director. You will probably have to pay for them yourself, though.
It is required where I work, too, and a lot of people go that route instead.
