Hi everyone!

I need to know what potential or new employers ask for on a reference.

Like, what sort of things, like attendence lateness etc

Does anyone know of anything else new employers will ask for prom a previous employer?

Questions about your suitability, i.e., punctuality, attendance. sickness. However your previous employer is not allowed to say anything bad about you. They can, though, refuse to give a reference.

One question I heard of was "Do you know of any reason why this person should not be employed?"

I got a bit of a dodgy reference from my last employer to my current one. It left me with some explaining to do on my first day (i.e. my old boss was a tosser). Fortunately, my new boss had to conceed that what he read did indeed imply that my old boss was a tosser.

If you think you are going to get a dodgy reference then do what I did and ask to see it before they send it. If they say no then you have reason to suspect that they are trying to nobble you and you can use that as your defence with your new employer. If they say yes (which mine did) then read it, say nothing (even if you think it is unfair) and then spend the next few weeks planning your answers to antcipated tough questioning from your new employer.

At the end of the day, as a new employee you will be taken on probation anyway and if you are found to be wanting you will be dismissed. If you are a conscientious and hard-working employee then you have nothing to fear.

Do you consider the person suitable for the job in question?

Did you have any reason to doubt their inegrity?

They often ask about sickness leave in particular.

But we normally only give in reply the dates of joining and leaving and the job title

if you were reliable
if they would employ you again....depends what job you are after. most places don't check references
