Does he play video games? Or enjoy Dvd's? Does he play guitar or any other music? You could get him like tab book if he plays guitar... like of his fav. band or something. What is his favorite thing to do when he has nothing else to do? I would expand on that.

See if there's a Five Below near you: http://www.fivebelow.com/storeFinder.html
This is THE coolest store IN the universe and my kids do all their shopping there because nothing in the store (no matter how awesome!!) is over $5!!
The whole store is geared toward pre-teens and teens... but there's stuff there you can buy for parents and stuff too... but the bulk of it is just geared toward 10 to 18 year olds. We love this place :)
We've never made a trip where we couldn't find something for everyone... including funny T-shirts for $5 and Squishies (those microbead pillows everyone loves) and CD cases and hand weights and mugs and CD's and DVD's and books and hats and beach towels and snowboots and black lights and mini backpacks and gadgets and gizmos galore!
Have fun shopping... and good luck :)
(If that doesn't work out for you because there's nothing near you... get him a $5 Blockbuster giftcard, a box of Goobers or Raisinettes and a microwave popcorn... it's a movie night gift and he'll love it) :)

Does he like video games, movies? If so, check out half.com...you can get so many new (or used if you prefer, they are sometimes cheaper) items for a fraction of the cost than in the stores. With only 10 days to go before Xmas, you might want to hurry though with the online ordering.

it would depend on his interest, does he like a sport? a team? if so, maybe a tshirt with their logo, or a baseball cap,,,,,,, also many schools sell sweatshirts, tshirts etc with their logo on it, if his school does and he doesnt have those items, perhaps one of those,,,,,,,, as last resort, what about a gift certificate to a fast food place he likes? burger king, mcdonalds, pizzahut etc most all teen boys like to eat! and you can get those in various amounts, from $5 up,,,,, perhaps put it in an envelope on top of a box of candy ,

Get him an iTunes giftcard. They range from $10-$50, I think.
If he doesn't have an iPod, then get him a giftcard to his favorite store...or get him a Starbucks giftcard.
I guess what I'm trying to say is you can't go wrong with giftcards

I don't see the relevance of him being popular and you not on the gift but my suggestion is an itunes gift certificate.

First of all, if he gives you hell for being in the popular crowd while you aren't, don't give him anything.
Otherwise, get something on clearance like this:
