“A celebrity has just as much right to speak out as a regular person.” Sure, they have the right to state their opinions but, not worldwide. Celebrities aren’t like regular people; they are famous and they can persuade people into thinking like them.

I know many of you dont agree with my views, but im writing a persuasion speech and need examples.

Ex: Ronald Reagan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Dixie Chicks....

any other examples? thanx.

You have to remember that Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger are not just entertainers/celebrities, they were willing to commit their lives and money to public service. Sure there was some ego stroking involved also but that is a big commitment. Would you be willing to spend quite a bit of your own money and have your whole life put under a microscope.

As far as a group like the Dixie Chicks they have no accountability except people not going to their concerts and not buying their CD's. They are entitled to their opinions but I don't think that they should be protected from the consequences of those opinions if they are not necessarily popular. When they choose to voice their opinions that is the chance they take.

My opinion is that entertainers should stick to entertaining and not try to impose their beliefs on other people just because they have a forum where they can.

I don't think anyone should try to impose their beliefs on anyone else, whatever the forum (Vies a' Vie Answers)

Does an Iraqi give a sh** about what the Dixie chicks or George Cloney say about anything? People in Darfur don't have a clue what any American Celebrity is saying about them. However, just because you're famous doesn't mean you can't voice your political views and since most people could care less about what a famous actor says about politics it doesn't really matter much anyway unless it's for a good cause or charity like Darfur, Global
Warming, poverty, hunger, HIV, etc.

There is a huge difference between Ronald Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger, versus all the current celebrities you are referring to. Both them left the entertainment business and dedicated themselves to elected office only. They were not asking "fans" to listen to their politics while still being entertainers. And they didn't have to serve "two masters" - the public interest AND those who have invested in their entertainment careers and don't want them insulting the viewpoints of half their potential customers. i.e. My wife and I will never go to another movie that has Sean Penn, Susan Sarandon, Alex Baldwin, Ted Danson, etc. etc.

Celebrities have the same right to voice their opinions on Political issues as you do. The biggest problem is when Republicans elect clueless celebrities like Schwarzenegger and Reagan to public office.

everyone has the right to voice their opinion in a democratic society -- short of inciting a riot.
Being a celeb is no different -- they just have more of an opportunity to be heard. They risk become unpopular if their views are not popular. They have the opportunity to make change just like politicians do however their views may be truly personal rather than paid for like a politician's.

Celebrities using their fame tfor political opinions is a propaganda tool. Them speaking out can shape a person's opinion for better or for worse. It's a chance they take. As far as it being acceptable or appropriate, it's part of our society; not much in this society is acceptable for every person.

The 1st amendment protects that right. The question is "Why do all these idiots listen?" some of these people never even finished high school. What's next? Acting lessons from Al Gore?

Of course it is acceptable. They are Americans and have the same right as everyone else. If they are fortunate to have the fame to voice their opinions, so be it. No one is required to listen to them.

Is that any different than someone using their family name to voice their political positions........and become the President....

Do you think it is acceptable that pple have opinions based on what a celebrity says without coming to their own opinion independently?
Answer pple come to their biases and prejudices by themselves.
All questioning and moaning about the process is elitist nonsense.
If you have an opinion, policy, conviction go out and fight for it's validation.
Through compromise alliances and argument.
That's democracy. ,

Uh-huh, well then politicians should not be allowed to voice their political views either because they might influence listeners.

However, I hardly see any celebrities going on about a global political agenda- mostly they fly around with humanitarian concerns. And why shouldn't they- often they have as much capacity to give aid as small nations?
